Race Mechanics

See Target Speed for more information on the Final Leg.

Umamusume Races are very complex, with many mechanics to simulate a competitive environment. This series of guides aim to explain these mechanics in a digestible manner. The guide is designed to be read top down, relying on information from previous sections to understand the next.

This information was derived from multiple sources along with personal testing. Much credit goes to the Uma Musume Race Mechanics doc maintained by KuromiAK.

Important Concepts

This section elaborates on the basic concepts required to understand the remainder of this guide.

Sections

All Tracks are divided into 24 sections of equal length. These Sections are then grouped into phases as follows.

  • Opening Leg, or Early-Race (Phase = 0): Sections 1-4
  • Middle Leg, or Mid-Race (Phase = 1): Sections 5-16
  • Late-Race: Sections 17-24
    • Final Leg, or Accel Zone (Phase = 2): Sections 17-20
    • Last Spurt, or Homestretch (Phase = 3): Sections 21-24

Frame

Time in Races is divided up by 15 Frames per second. For the purposes of this section, each Frame will be assumed equal to 66ms.

Lengths

Also known as Bashin in Japanese, a Length is 2.5m in-game. After a Race, distance between Umas is displayed by Lengths.

Acceleration

INFO

The unit of measurement for Acceleration is m/s² . However, as the community trend is to leave out the unit of measurement when discussing Acceleration and Velocity, we will be doing the same in the following sections.

Acceleration is the rate at which an Uma’s Current Speed increases, calculated using the following formula.

Accel=BaseAccel×500FinalPower×StrategyPhaseCoefficient×GroundTypeProficiencyModifier×DistanceProficiencyModifier+(SkillModifier+StartDashModifier)

Formula Variables
Base Acceleration

Base Acceleration (BaseAccel) = 0.0006

BaseAccel on an uphill = 0.0004

Strategy Phase Coefficient

Each Running Style has different Acceleration coefficients based on the current Race Phase.

Ground Aptitude Modifier

A modifier is applied to Accel based on our Ground Aptitude (Turf, Dirt Aptitude).

Distance Aptitude Modifier

There is a negative modifier on Acceleration for Distance Aptitudes E or lower.

Skill Modifier

Additive Modifier from Acceleration Skills.

Start Dash Modifier

A flat 24 increase to Acceleration at the start of the Race. See Early-Race section for information.

Deceleration

When the Current Speed of Umas are above their Target Speed, they will decelerate at a rate based on the Phase.

Stats

Behind the scenes, Stats are calculated differently than is conventionally understood.

Track Features

Main Page: Track Features

This is how Umas interact with different Terrain features, such as Uphills and Downhills, throughout the Race.

Stamina, Guts, and HP

Main Page: HP

HP is a resource that Umas consume throughout the Race. This section explains Stamina and Guts’ relationship with HP, and the mechanics of HP consumption.

Early-Race

Main Page: Early-Race

The early-race is the first sixth of the Race. Umas exit the Starting Gate, and Position Keep begins.

Mid-Race

Main Page: Mid-Race

The mid-race is the proceeding half of the Race. The Base Target Speed changes, and Position Keep ends on Section 10.

Late-Race

Main Page: Late-Race

The late-race is split into 2 Phases, and is the final third of the Race. Umas accelerate to their Last Spurt Target Speed and spurt to the end of the Race.

Position Keep

Main Page: Position Keep

Position Keep is a mechanic that affects the behavior of Umas from Sections 1 through 10.

Target Speed

Main Page: Target Speed

At any given point, an Uma aims to maintain their Target Speed, which changes throughout the Race.
